For as long as I can remember, I have been messing with my hair. Growing up in L.A. it is easy to see fashion and music evolving at a fast pace. With that, the hairstyles were also changing and I tried them all. Most of my friends were hair stylists so it came as no surprise when one day my friend Pat encouraged me to get into beauty school. I discovered while in school this was my path and what I was meant to do, and I love being a stylist!
I would say when it comes to haircolour I like to have more of that classic approach with a modernist twist. Products and techniques have advanced tremendously to make our jobs easier but also let us think outside the box more often. Having the knowledge of the classic techniques allows me to work within and outside the rules with more ease to create more avant-garde types of color. I believe a woman’s hair is her greatest accessory, and when everything else comes off, she should be left with great hair.
I draw my inspiration from almost anything and everything. I believe keeping up with music, art, fashion, and architecture is key. With the rate at which music and fashion have been evolving you can dive into so many sub cultures now that the access to inspiration is almost limitless. With musicians I like to not only see what they are doing in their videos but on tour as well to really see the essence of their style and not what a designer has chosen for them.
My advice to a client new to color sitting in my chair would be that natural hair is beautiful and that the best thing to do is just enhance what you have. Maybe put in some very natural but bolder highlights, or maybe just a glaze to change the tone. This would give us a good starting point for future services to keep the hair as shiny and healthy as possible.
I think the celebrities with great hair are Zooey Deschanel, Christina Hendricks, Pink, Gwen Stefani, Rihanna, and Victoria Beckham. I had the privilege of apprenticing under two Vidal Sassoon Master Stylists for the first two years of my career learning all about geometrical cutting as well as their approach to color. I am extremely excited about my career and have further aspirations of becoming certified as an Educator and Artist with both Redken and Sassoon.
